How will the meals work? See Food Menu here
Meals will be served in the dining hall at fixed times each day (we have no influence on this). It will be buffet-style and we will sit together at big tables. There will also be a preparation station to prepare extra food if you like. There will be a fridge to store some food for our group. There is a gluten-free option. For vegetarians there will be some non-meat protein choices but there will not be a strictly vegetarian option. We suggest that if you are concerned about getting enough non-meat protein, to bring some of your own to prepare and supplement what will be provided. What will the lessons be like?
Bolokada is a very experienced teacher and will teach to all levels. Six of the lessons will be djembe lessons. One lesson will be a traditional style dundun lesson for all levels. We will have a limited amount of dunduns. If you do not bring a dundun, you may not be able to take the dundun lesson. There will be dundun players helping/supporting during the djembe lessons. There will likely be opportunities to play dundun in the lessons for those who want to and feel confident to try it.
Bolokada will teach technique, timing and the fundamentals for each rhythm. He will also provide cultural and historical information about the rhythms. We will have the opportunity to learn the song that goes with some of the rhythms. This wholistic approach allows for a deepening experience of West African music.
African teacher who live in New Mexico will also be teaching at BoloCamp. Soriba Fofana will teach a dundun class on Friday afternoon. Malé Fainké will teach a dundun class on Saturday afternoon and a dance class on Sunday afternoon. Everyone is encouraged to take the dance lesson for the wholistic approach to West African music. These lessons are included in your registration. However, donations directly to the teachers are very welcome!!
Can I rent a Djembe or dundun?
If you are interested in renting a djembe for the Camp, please respond to the email that you will receive when you register. The cost is $60 for rental for the duration of the Camp. We have a limited number of djembe to rent.
For the dundun classes we are relying on the local community to supply their dunduns. We will do the best we can to get enough drums for these classes. If you are not brining a dundun to camp, please be prepared to possibly not being able to play.
What else is there to do at Adventure Camp?
The property is huge and includes numerous hiking and mountain biking trails that are accessible right from your room/dorm. There are fields to play soccer, frisbee etc. There is also a lounge with a coffee shop, some snacks for sale, a pool table, shuffle board etc. There is no alcohol for sale but you can bring your own and enjoy in moderation and within our group. There may very likely be other groups on the camp premises.
